    Testing RIAF model for Sgr A* using the size measurements

    Recent radio observations by the VLBA at 7 and 3.5 mm produced the high-resolution images of the compact radio source located at the center of our Galaxy--Sgr A*, and detected its wavelength-dependent intrinsic sizes at the two wavelengths. This provides us with a good chance of testing previously-proposed theoretical models for Sgr A*. In this {\em Letter}, we calculate the size based on the radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) model proposed by Yuan, Quataert & Narayan (2003). We find that the predicted sizes after taking into account the scattering of the interstellar electrons are consistent with the observations. We further predict an image of Sgr A* at 1.3 mm which can be tested by future observations.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure; accepted by ApJ

    Rough feature selection for intelligent classifiers

    Abstract. The last two decades have seen many powerful classification systems being built for large-scale real-world applications. However, for all their accuracy, one of the persistent obstacles facing these systems is that of data dimensionality. To enable such systems to be effective, a redundancy-removing step is usually required to pre-process the given data. Rough set theory offers a useful, and formal, methodology that can be employed to reduce the dimensionality of datasets. It helps select the most information rich features in a dataset, without transforming the data, all the while attempting to minimise information loss during the selection process. Based on this observation, this paper discusses an approach for semantics-preserving dimensionality reduction, or feature selection, that simplifies domains to aid in developing fuzzy or neural classifiers. Computationally, the approach is highly efficient, relying on simple set operations only. The success of this work is illustrated by applying it to addressing two real-world problems: industrial plant monitoring and medical image analysis.

    Current stage of the ATCA follow-up for SPLASH

    Four ground-state OH transitions were detected in emission, absorption and maser emission in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH). We re-observed these OH masers with the Australia Telescope Compact Array to obtain positions with high accuracy (~1 arcsec). According to the positions, we categorised these OH masers into different classes, i.e. star formation, evolved stars, supernova remnants and unknown origin. We found one interesting OH maser source (G336.644-0.695) in the pilot region, which has been studied in detail in Qiao et al. (2016a). In this paper, we present the current stage of the ATCA follow-up for SPLASH and discuss the potential future researches derived from the ATCA data.Comment: 2 pages, conference, IAU symposium 33
